Meet the Artist

Welcome!
Hi, I'm Marc Peters. I founded Molterra Jewellery out of a fascination with the science of metals and the beauty of nature.
Here’s a little bit about me and where my passion for jewellery design started.
Who am I?
From Alloy Design to Organic Forms: My Jewellery Journey
I came to Australia 4 years ago from the great white north of Canada, to do my PhD in Materials Engineering. My focus has been on designing new alloy compositions for metal 3D printing applications (additive manufacturing) that are more resistant to corrosion in harsh environments like the ocean.
This technical foundation allows me to bring a unique perspective to jewellery. I understand how to manipulate metals at the microscopic level, enhance their workability, and truly make them shine. I also explore how 3D printing and design principles can be woven into the artistic landscape, creating pieces that are both innovative and deeply rooted in material science.
For the past two years, I’ve immersed myself in the ancient technique of cuttlefish bone casting, exploring geometries, textures, and setups (read: making plenty of mistakes) to refine the surface quality and tactile feel of each piece. My approach is anything but traditional—developing a creative lens shaped by science rather than art.
My journey into jewellery began while hiking along the rugged Australian coastline, where I first discovered cuttlefish bone washed ashore. At the time, I had no idea these natural forms could be used as casting molds—but that moment sparked a fascination with organic design and ancient techniques that continues to shape my work today. I take inspiration from nature in my designs whenever possible.
I hand-collect the cuttlefish bones from the beach, use recycled silver, and source opals, sapphires, and other gemstones directly from Australian suppliers. These choices reflect my commitment to sustainability, ethical sourcing, and a deep respect for the materials and people behind each piece.
I’m extremely proud of the work I make and can’t wait to share it—hoping you’ll find as much joy in wearing it as I do in creating it.

Outdoor Lifestyle
Outside of the studio, you’ll likely find me hiking or rock climbing—drawn to the peace and recharge that nature offers. The smells of the forest, the wildflowers, and the sweeping landscapes often find their way into the flow and form of my designs. Nature isn’t just a backdrop—it’s a collaborator.
